In memoriam James Crawford: International Lawyer
During his long and illustrious career, James Crawford took on many roles: academic, research mentor, counsel, ILC member, arbitrator, and finally judge on the International Court of Justice. His abundance of roles was only matched by his intellectual curiosity, especially about his own specialty of international law; not satisfied to be an expert in one field of international law, he investigated all of them. James Crawford was also a great friend of the American Society of International Law. His accomplishments were recognized by the Society, from the award for Creative Scholarship in 1981 (for his book The Creation of States in International Law) to the Manley O. Hudson Medal in 2012.
