Innovations in International Law in Countering Gender Discrimination

Description:

At a time when international women's human rights face renewed political and ideological pressures, and LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack, this panel examines how innovations in international law are shaping new responses to gender discrimination. This webinar will explore the intersections of international human rights, criminal, and humanitarian law in advancing gender equality and resisting rollback.

Panelists will analyze emerging jurisprudence, normative developments, and institutional strategies that strengthen gender-responsive accountability and reinforce international legal standards. The discussion will consider how the concept of positive peace can inform the design and implementation of legal and policy frameworks that go beyond the absence of conflict to ensure structural inclusion and justice. Panelists will also discuss opportunities and challenges in creating solidarity between women activists and youth, migrant, environmental, labor, and other civil society groups.

By situating current challenges within evolving legal practice, this session invites reflection on the transformative potential of international law to sustain and expand gender-related rights in an era of contestation.

Panelists:

  • Valerie Oosterveld, University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law/Christina L. Beharry, Foley Hoag LLP (moderators and opening remarks)
