Current Human Rights Developments and Challenges in the Americas: Priorities and work plan of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

Along with traditional and persistent human rights violations, the Americas face additional human rights challenges, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, the erosion of democracy in several countries, freedom of expression in the digital era, migration, and the questioning of multilateralism, among many others. In this context, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States (OAS) has the mission of promoting and protecting human rights in the region.

During this event, the president of the IACHR will refer to the main current human rights developments and challenges in the Americas, and the response of the institution, in terms of priorities and work plan. It is to be noted that the IACHR is currently led, for the first time, by a board comprised of women only.

This is the first event of a series, in which the presidents or heads of regional and universal human rights bodies are being invited for keynote speeches and conversations on current human rights developments and challenges, and on the response from the institutions that they lead.

Keynote Speaker:

  • Antonia Urrejola, President, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

Moderator:

  • Ignacio Álvarez, Executive Director, IHR Legal; Co-chair, ASIL Human Rights Interest Group

This session is organized by ASIL’s Human Rights Interest Group
