Countering Gender Apartheid with International Law: a Strategic Convening

Description:

The University of Michigan School of Law, LSA Center for South Asian Studies, and LSA Donia Human Rights Center, together with the USC Gould School of Law Justice & Accountability Initiative, the American Society of International Law and Women in International Law Interest Group invite you to join a convening of experts focused on strategies for the codification and application of the emerging international legal norm of gender apartheid. The gender apartheid framework is about developing a more effective response to what the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called, ?the biggest violation of women?s rights on Earth,? which is the situation of Afghan women and girls under draconian Taliban rule, as well as other situations of de jure subjugation of women, such as in Iran.

On Thursday, September 18, from 9am-1pm ET, 3 panels will focus on: 1. The Global Human Rights Struggle to End Gender Apartheid; 2. Vital Alliances between International Lawyers and Frontline Women Human Rights Defenders; and 3. International Legal Strategies for Countering Gender Apartheid.

Speakers include Afghan Women Human Rights Defenders, the UN Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan and members from the Committee on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls.
