Connecting for Conservation-Public and Private Implications of International Agreements on Biodiversity

Description:

The ASIL New York Chapter is pleased to present its inaugural event.

The discussion will proceed in two parts.  First, the Keynote Speaker, United Nations Legal Counsel and Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Conference that adopted the recent Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (“BBNJ”), Miguel de Serpa Soares, will discuss the far-reaching objectives of the BBNJ to protect and preserve the marine environment, to ensure adequate assessment and monitoring of potentially harmful activities, to promote the sharing of new marine technology, and to support development and use of marine scientific research.

In the second part of the discussion, Carole Laible, CEO of Domini Impact Investments, will discuss the opportunities for multidimensional engagement that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the BBNJ present and the role of the financial sector in achieving the goals they set forth.

The discussion will be followed by the first social networking hour of ASIL’s newly established New York Chapter.  This will mark the launch of the Chapter’s new networking series, designed to facilitate community and interaction between all of the diverse international law professionals in the New York area.  Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served.
