ABA INTERNATIONAL 2010 SPRING MEETING ADDRESSES THE CONVERGENCE OF THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEGAL PROFESSION
WASHINGTON, D.C. Feb. 17, 2010 -- The American Bar Association’s Section of International Law will host its 2010 Spring Meeting April 13-17 at the Grand Hyatt New York, located at 109 E. 42 St. in New York City. The global economy and its effects on the international legal profession and its clients will be the key issue of discussion at the meeting.
Internationally renowned legal experts will be speaking, including Harold Hongju Koh, legal adviser to the Department of State and former dean of Yale Law School. Koh has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and testified before Congress. He has authored or co-authored eight books and more than 150 articles on international and national security, international business transactions, foreign affairs and human rights. Ambassador Abdullah H. Haroon, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, will be speaking about the UN's newest Call to Action. Also speaking will be Martin Lipton, business law leader and creator of the "poison pill" defense, which was created in response to tender-based hostile takeovers.
The meeting will feature the exhibition, "Lawyers Without Rights," created by the German Federal Bar and made available for the first time in the United States to ABA International. The exhibit features detailed and poignant accounts of the lives and fates of Jewish lawyers throughout Germany who suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime.
ABA International, in conjunction with the New York State Bar Association's International Section, will host the "International Law Boot Camp," featuring the Fundamentals of International Practice, on April 13. The boot camp is a full-day series of fundamental international law programs that satisfy New York state's transitional CLE requirements. It will include career development and networking programs, addressing, among other things, how to make the most of social networking.
On April 14 the "Managing Partner Summit" will bring together leaders from 20 law firms from around the world to discuss shifting paradigms in the legal profession caused by the global economic crisis. Topics include: "Law Firm Strategy after the Recession" and "The Secrets of Attracting and Leading the Best People."
Throughout the five-day meeting, discussions and presentations will be made by prominent representatives from government, international organizations, academia and business, such as: the UN International Development Fund for Women, the U.S. Court of International Trade, Lawyers Without Borders, New York University Law School, Google Inc., the UN Development Program, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, General Electric Co., Columbia Law School, the World Bank, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Federal Trade Commission, Georgetown University Law Center, the Department of Justice and the Department of State.
Crucial developments in the international legal community will be discussed, including: changes in international investment laws, mergers and acquisitions in times of crisis, legal outsourcing, enforcement of trade preference programs, cross border e-discovery, economic underpinnings of the new administration, public-private partnerships, cross-border insolvency, global trends in corporate governance, renewable energy, the military's role in the rule of law, mergers and acquisitions in times of crisis, international criminal organizations and many more, with more than 70 programs in all.
