International Humanitarian Law in Crisis: Current Issues [1]

Date:
Friday, February 14, 2025 - 10:30am to 12:00pm
Description:

This panel will offer an update on our examination of the application of international humanitarian law (IHL) principles to the current conflict in Israel/Gaza and in other conflict zones. Expert panelists from academia and international NGOs will discuss a few core issues, requirements for the protection of civilians during conflicts, including access to humanitarian organizations, the implications of targeted killings and the use of artificial intelligence, and the increased role of the International Criminal Court, which has issued indictments and arrest warrants for world leaders. Our goal is to facilitate respectful conversations around difficult issues. Audience Q & A with panelists is encouraged.

This panel is the seventh in our series on International Humanitarian Law – the first six webinars, beginning with our first on October 27, 2023, are available on YouTube or the asil.org website.

Panelists:

  • Christian Jorgenson, American Red Cross
  • Shiri Krebs, Deakins University
  • Mary Ann McGrail (moderator), Law Office of M.A. McGrail
  • Ido Rosenzweig, Haifa University
  • Omar Shakir, Human Rights Watch
