Protecting Cultural Property in East Africa: Raising Awareness of National Legal Frameworks [1]

To build on existing efforts to combat antiquities looting and trafficking in East Africa, this ASIL-hosted webinar will gather representatives from Mozambique, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda to raise global awareness of the national legal frameworks for cultural property protection in East Africa. Panelists will share insights into each country’s cultural heritage and antiquities laws, exploring how they are implemented in practice and where opportunities for collaboration exist. By taking a comparative, regionally grounded approach, the webinar aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation and support collective action against the illicit trade in East African archaeological and ethnographic materials.

  • Fredrick Nsibambi, Deputy Executive Director Mr. Fredrick Nsibambi is Deputy Executive Director at the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) and a former Heritage Programmes Manager at the organization

  • Helena Arose (moderator) Director of Programs The Antiquities Coalition
