ASIL's Latin America Interest Group (LAIG) invites you to the interest group's inaugural event, which will consider international legal implications of the controversial Nicaraguan Canal.

Speakers:

  • Maria Luisa Acosta, Nicaraguan indigenous rights attorney, Director of Centro de Asistencia Legal a Pueblos Indígenas
  • Fergus Mackay, Senior Counsel at Forest Peoples Programme
  • Jorge Huete, Senior Vice President of the Central American University, former President of the Nicaraguan Academy of Sciences
  • Daniel Magraw, Fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and President Emeritus of the Center for International Environmental Law
  • Dinah Shelton, Manatt/Ahn Professor of International Law Emeritus, George Washington University Law School 

The speakers will examine how this $50 billion inter-ocean megaproject could impact indigenous and Afro-Caribbean rights, and how international environmental law should regulate this initiative. 

This event is sponsored by the LAIG, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, Seattle University, and George Washington University Law School. A free lunch will be included.
