In 2007, ASIL sponsored the World Affairs Councils of America's Academic WorldQuest Competition. This high school program, founded in 2003, is unique among K-12 knowledge-based competitions in the United States due to its focus on international issues. ASIL provides resources to prepare and educate the high school students on international law and the international law category, for which ASIL designs the questions. The questions are taken from one of ASIL's core electronic publications, ASIL Insights as well as the Society's public education booklet, International Law: 100 Ways It Shapes Our Lives.
The impact of ASIL's participation in WorldQuest can be measured by the number of students that spend several months preparing for the competition and its ten categories, now including international law. Over 3,000 students participated in the 2007-2008 competition. In addition, hundreds of teachers and coaches provided instruction on the international law material.
Through its partnership with the World Affairs Councils of America, ASIL is expanding its public awareness mission of fostering discussion and study of international law to high school students.
ASIL would like to congratulate the winner of the 2007-2008 competition, the team from the North Carolina School of Science and Math.
