Louis Henkin (1917-2010)

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of the passing of our past President (1992-1994), Journal Co-Editor-in-Chief (1978-1984), and 1995 Hudson Medal recipient, Louis Henkin. Dean Schizer at Columbia University wrote today that "Lou has been a towering presence here at the Law School since he joined the faculty in 1962.  His intellectual and personal contributions were immense.  An influential pioneer in the field of human rights law, Lou was an inspiration, an intellectual giant, a generous mentor and teacher, and a cherished friend."

The American Society of International Law has lost a person who has embodied for decades all that it values most: Generosity, Integrity, Scholarship, Commitment. Many members of the American Society were his students and feel this loss keenly.  All of us were Lou's friend and will miss him profoundly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Alice, sons Joshua, David, and Daniel, and the entire Henkin family.

David D. Caron
