Welcoming WordsQuestions regarding the oceans are more important and critical today than ever. The Society thus particularly welcomes the Law of the Sea Interest Group's initiative in making its "Law of the Sea Reports" a reality and a timely forum for sharing developments in, and insights regarding, the law of the sea. The objectives of sustainable multi-use management of the oceans and sound stewardship of this precious environment are confounded by numerous challenges. The traditional challenges of incentives leading to a tragedy of the commons and the tremendous difficulties in policing such a tremendous area are magnified by new phenomena such as climate change, fisheries depletion and ocean acidification. A fundamental goal of the Society is to bring the excellence and expertise of its members to bear on the most pressing challenges of the day. The "Law of the Sea Reports" helps us move toward that goal. Our congratulations to the Interest Group for launching this exciting initiative.
