International Humanitarian Law Dialogs

ASIL Programs > Judicial Education and Training > Transnational National Judicial Dialogue > International Humanitarian Law Dialogs

In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, the American Society of International Law, in cooperation with the Chautauqua Institution, the Robert H. Jackson Center, Syracuse University College of Law, and many others, organized an historic annual event on August 25-26, 2008 that brought together current and past prosecutors of international criminal tribunals, including former prosecutors who were present at Nuremberg, to lead discussions concerning international humanitarian law and prosecuting genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

Inaugurated in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Hague Rules of 1907, the cornerstone of the laws regulating armed conflict today, this annual gathering allows the participants, their guests, and the public to contemplate lessons learned and future developments involving international justice and efforts to end impunity in a roundtable setting, moderated by leading international law experts.

The Dialogs address a number of issues in the world today, such as "ethnic cleansing," forced conscription of child soldiers, rape and gender based violence, and how international courts identify the perpetrators of such acts, including heads of state, and bring them to justice.

The Dialogs culminate with the issuance of a Declaration from the prosecutors.
