    Monday, April 10 2006
    Washington, DC - United States

On April 10th, ASIL hosted a presentation by Andrea Schulz, First Secretary of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH).  Dr. Schulz gave a brief overview of the HCCH, including its history, mission and member states.  She then gave an overview of the Convention on Choice of Court Agreements, which was signed June 30, 2005.

The Convention on Choice of Court Agreements was designed to ensure that parties' choice of court agreements, made relating to international commercial transactions and other international civil matters, are honored. It also aims to ensure recognition and enforcement of court judgments given by the courts designated by the parties' choice of court agreements.  This new Hague Convention is perhaps most easily understood as the litigation counterpart to the New York Arbitration Convention.

Dr. Schulz was introduced by David P. Steward of the U.S. Department of State and the question and answer portion of the session was moderated by Peter Trooboff of Covington & Burling.  Topics of discussion ranged from application of the Convention to the likelihood of ratification by States parties.
