The New Roles of Corporations in Global Governance

Description:

**Due to inclement weather, this event has been postponed**

This year's Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law conference, titled "The New Roles of Corporations in Global Governance," takes as its starting point the fact that, in recent years, corporations have begun to play a significantly bigger role in international governance. In addition to being the subjects of international regulation, corporations are now becoming increasingly influential participants in the international lawmaking process. This conference, guided by an esteemed panel of experts, will delve into this important development, exploring, among other things, how corporations interact with traditional sources of international authority, how corporations form networks that seek to influence their regulatory environment, how corporations are performing what have traditionally been state functions, and, more generally, the ways in which corporations are redefining the nature of international regulation in the 21st century.

The keynote speaker for the conference will be Bennett Freeman Senior Vice President for Sustainability Research and Policy at Calvert Investments. From 2003 until early 2006, he led Burson-Marsteller's Global Corporate Responsibility practice advising multinationals on policy development, stakeholder engagement and communications strategies related to human rights, labor rights and sustainable development. During the Clinton Administration he served in three positions as a presidential appointee in the State Department, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor from 1999 to early 2001.
