The American Society of International Law will host its annual briefing series geared for Summer Associates at participating 2010 ASIL partnership law firms.  The 2010 series will consist of several summer briefing sessions held across the United States that will  give law firm Summer Associates the opportunity to engage with  international legal practitioners representing a broad range of specialized areas of international law.  Real world perspectives on the development of practical lawyering skills related to careers within the public and private sectors of international law will be emphasized throughout the sessions. Participants will also get to learn about ASIL and its international law resources.

David CaronDavid D. Caron, Co-Director of the Law of the Sea Institute and Co-Director of the Miller Institute on Global Challenges and the Law, University of California, Berkley Law
David D. Caron currently is the C. William Maxeiner Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkley Law, where he serves also as Co-Director of the Law of the Sea Institute and Co-Director of the Miller Institute on Global Challenges and the Law. He is a member of the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law, and Co-Editor of World Arbitration and Mediation Review and of SSRN International Environmental Law eJournal. He is a member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum as well as the U.S. Department of State Advisory Committee on Public International Law. Caron has served as arbitrator, lead counsel, and expert in both private and public international arbitral proceedings. From 1996 to 2003, he served as a Commissioner with the Precedent Panel (E2) of the United Nations Compensation Commission in Geneva resolving claims arising out of the 1990 Gulf War. Caron served as Chair of the Advisory Board for the Institute of Transnational Arbitration from 2005 to 2009 and is a member of the Bars of the State of California and of England and Wales. Himamauli Das, Assistant General Counsel for International Affairs, U.S. Treasury Department
Himamauli Das is responsible for the direction of all legal activities of the Department with regard to a broad range of international economic and financial matters, including matters related to global economic stability, including U.S. participation in the G-20; international banking and securities matters; national security and foreign investment in United States (CFIUS); trade and investment matters, particularly in the financial services sector; sovereign debt and development issues; U.S. participation in international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank; and climate finance and legislation, and other environmental matters.  From 2004 to 2007, Himamauli served as Deputy Legal Adviser on the National Security Council.  He has also served in the State Department Office of the Legal Adviser where he worked as an Attorney-Adviser on environmental issues and on economic and business affairs, including U.S. economic sanctions and terrorism finance. Himamauli earned his law degree, masters in public policy and undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley, and a masters degree in astrophysics, planetary and atmospheric sciences from the University of Colorado.  Himamauli clerked for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Abby Cohen Smutny, Partner, White & Case LLP
Abby Cohen Smutny is a leading specialist in international arbitration particularly for disputes involving states and state parties.She often serves as lead counsel in high-stakes cases involving contentious political issues, complex claims for compensation and legal issues of first impression. She has particular experience in matters involving public international law and treaty based claims, international investment protections, expropriations, disputes with state enterprises, issues of state responsibility, sovereign immunity, political risk, and the enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards. She has represented and counseled clients in disputes involving numerous industries, including banking, financial services, oil & gas, mining, power generation, real estate development, water supply, retail, pharmaceuticals, construction, tobacco, railroads, telecommunications, and manufacturing. Ms. Smutny regularly represents clients in arbitrations before ICSID and its Additional Facility, the ICC, the Vienna International Arbitral Centre, the LCIA, as well as in ad hoc arbitration, such as under the UNCITRAL Rules.  Ms. Smutny has been recognized repeatedly for her leading expertise in Chambers Global Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers, Who’s Who Legal, The Best Lawyers in America, and other guides to the profession. She frequently speaks on international arbitration and investor-State dispute resolution and has lectured at Cambridge University’s Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law and at American University’s Washington College of Law on developments in international investment arbitration.
