In 2005, ASIL awarded its first Helton Fellowships to six outstanding students and young professionals out of a total of 47 applications from individuals throughout Africa, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America. Helton Fellows for 2005 included:
Anicee Van Engeland , Visiting researcher at Harvard Law School and Ph.d candidate at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris. Anicee worked to incorporate human rights law in the Iranian legal system in conjunction with the Center for Human Rights at Mofid University and the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Peace and Democracy at Shahid Beheshti University in Iran.
Rosalind Evans , MSc candidate in forced migration at the Refugee Studies Centre at Oxford University. Rosalind implemented a human rights education project for children in a refugee camp in southern Lebanon in coordination with the National Association for Vocational Training and Social Services, a Lebanese non-governmental organization.
Elizabeth Brundige , Fellow at the International Association of Women Judges. Elizabeth documented gender equality and women’s rights in Tanzania and neighboring countries through the IAWJ’s Jurisprudence and Equality Program, which provides human rights training for judges and magistrates in East and Southern Africa.
Mark Pallis and Benedetta Lacey , Barristers, Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. Mark and Benedetta worked with the Refugee Law Project (RLP) at Makerere University which provides legal assistance in the Ikaffee refugee camp in Uganda. Their work involved research and field work at the camp, as well as making contributions to the RLP’s overall efforts to improve legal access in refugee camps.
Anna Pollock , Joint degree candidate in law and international affairs at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. Anna worked with Frontiers, a non-governmental organization in Beirut, where she provides legal assistance to Palestinian refugees in an effort to register these individuals under the mandates of either UNHCR or UNRWA.
